Day One of the Competitions Opens with a Bang
Although China came in with well over 600 athletes for the games in Beijing, their hopes for a first gold of the games was soon dashed. Early this morning, the 10m Air Rifle competition started off with a bang. Du Li, the Chinese, medalist in Athens, found herself trailing by 2 points in the final round, and sadly did not even medal, with a disappointing 5th place. The honours of the first gold went to Katerina Emmons, representing the Czech republic.
China still has longer term goals. To have the best gold and overall medal count for the Beijing games. Undaunted by the first loss, the mens 10m Air Rifle ended on a much different note. China’s Pang Wei, capturing the gold solidly for the event.
Also on todays schedule will be mens and womens preliminary and qualifying rounds in swimming. We should be seeing the Equestrian events in dressage, Cycling and judo. So we are in full swing, although the streets are still abuzz with the Opening spectacle of last night. Beijing’s planning is surely paying off with the opening venues all going off with no hitches and glitches ….
